Routes to Learning

Life long learning through travel

Routes to Learning was formerly Elderhostel Canada, and is now an independent non-profit organization dedicated to providing life long learning to Canadians 55+ through travel experiences in Canada and abroad. They offer 300 tours a year, and involving 10,000 participants.

Tania Sherwood, Director of Development, says that most of the trips they organize are in Canada, including favourites such as the Arctic Odyssey cruise and the Newfoundland circumnavigation, but they also organize trips abroad, including Europe, South America and China. Their trips vary in length from 3 to 20 days, but Tania says they all offer a chance to meet local people and explore first hand local ecology and culture.

The traveller perspective:

Michael Cooper is a tour leader for Routes to Learning Canada. He describes the type of people on these tours as good people to travel with; experienced and curious people in their 50s to 80s.  They aren't just interested in capturing what they see with their cameras, they are interested in meeting local people and understanding the places they visit.

He says the trips are affordable, they don't use luxury accommodations, but the hotels and the food are very good, and Routes ensures that they meet the needs of senior travellers.
